FOR News June 2005Faculty to Approach UMC President to Oppose Illegal U.S. Detentions at Guantanomo Bay & ElsewhereUniversity of Missouri-Columbia Linguist and Peace Studies instructor Kelly Maynard has initiated a signature letter to UMC President Elson S. Floyd and the Board of Curators insisting they publicly “Support the Constitution; Oppose the Illegal Detention” of individuals at the U.S. military's Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere around the world. The Bush-Cheney Administration, has violated some of the most basic principles on which this country has been founded by continuing to detain without charge "enemy combatants" on a U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay. The ongoing detention violates the institution on which our federal, and from there our individual states', governance rests. The detention at specifically violates Article VI clause 2, Amendment V, and Amendment VI of the Constitution of the United States of America, and more generally violates core American values (respect for human rights, responsibility to uphold national and international law, discovery and communication of the truth, and excellence in moral and legal precedents). Because the University characterizes itself as being deeply committed to upholding “core values--respect, responsibility, discovery, and excellence--we call upon you, as the voice of the University to condemn the continued detainment of persons against whom no charge has been levied and who have been deprived of due process. We request that you issue a statement demanding that these detainees be charged, provided with lawyers, and tried in open courts, or released.” Maynard reports more than 300 people have signed on thus far. She hopes to hand deliver copies of the letter to Pres. Floyd by the end of June.
